Reaching out to the world?
You know, we are probably one of the few Rotary clubs that are truly international. We have members in six countries, all over the US, and expatriates (Expats), living abroad. We have dozens of RV’ers and “Snowbirds” that spend months traveling and living throughout North America. When you think about it that’s pretty incredible.
It’s all due to the forward thinking of our founders and the dedication of Boards, officers and committees over the years.
Did you read the bio on Kate Mentink in this month’s Rotary Magazine (page 7)? In Mallorca Spain about a third of the population are expatriates (Expats), people living there from another country. It’s been happening for thousands of years. Some of our best literature has been written by Expats.
Covid, for as challenging as it’s been, may be a blessing for us. People were forced to work from home. And a whole bunch of them (about 8 million in the US) said they would take a 20% pay cut just to keep working remotely. A huge number of families decided that if they are going to work from home then they could work anywhere they want – a whole new generation of Expats.
There are 46 million RV’ers, divided evenly between those over and under 55. My parents spent twenty years as “full-timers,” people who live and travel in their RV. An incredible loving and giving community. They joined the Eagles club just so they could visit a local club, have lunch, and get involved in their service projects. Rotary can be that connection.
There are hundreds of millions of Expats, RV’ers and people working from home that are Rotarians that don’t know they’re Rotarians. We can give them that link to the familiar. That ticket that lets them connect with Rotary clubs wherever they are. To help them polish their leadership, public speaking, project management, and event planning (Rotary really knows how to do events). To give this club a direct connection with clubs around the world, and experience that connection from our living rooms. To know that true connection from the heart that only Rotary can offer.
We have the tools, do we have the will?
